Wheatley ups the ante with expanded store downtown

Jasmine Wheatley is upping the ante.

Wheatley, the former owner of Lipstick and Labels located below The Vicksburg apartments downtown, has expanded her business just a few years after its start.

Wheatley’s newest store, Up the Ante by Lipstick and Labels, officially opened Thursday after a grand opening ribbon cutting hosted by the Vicksburg-Warren County Chamber of Commerce.


Downtown businesses come together to support local law enforcement

Vicksburg may soon be sporting a tad more blue than normal thanks to a few local restaurants.

In the midst of national controversy surrounding America’s finest, a few downtown businesses are hoping to boost local law enforcement moral by offering blue ribbons to patrons in order to show support for those among us wearing a badge.


Merle Norman, salon opening downtown

Vicksburg’s first Merle Norman Cosmetic Studio was located on Washington Street in the 60s, according to the studio’s current owner, Sharon Rose Bishop.

And now it will be returning to its roots.

Downtown building renovated by new owner

After a destructive fire and years of neglect, one downtown building is getting a much needed face lift.

The former El Rio Mexican Restaurant, 1415 Washington St., is already in the beginning the stages of being renovated just weeks after Daryl Hollingsworth, who co-owns the Wine House, Ware House Apartments, The Mad Baker and other properties downtown, purchased the property.


SBA: Small business vital to economy

The mantra for the U.S. Small Business Administration’s weeklong Delta Region Main Street Road Tour rang true throughout the visit of Maria Contreras-Sweet, administrator of the SBA, to Vicksburg Thursday.

From inquiring about occupancies rates to whether local merchants have their own websites, Contreras-Sweet toured downtown Vicksburg and several local stores, including Michel’s Record Shop, 10 South Rooftop Bar and Grill, Frederick’s and Marcus Furniture.


Fourth a festive time for downtown

Dinner preceded Monday’s fireworks extravaganza for many of the thousands that gathered downtown to celebrate the Fourth of July, and local restaurants benefited from the increased foot traffic.



Convention Center prepares for annual Ritz on the River

Vicksburg will turn a little ritzier toward the end of this month, complete with a live 12-piece swing band and a chance to dress to the nines.

The third annual Ritz on the River will be held July 21 at the Vicksburg Convention Center, featuring Atlanta’s Rupert’s Orchestra and a multi-course meal.


10 South takes home Miss. Main Street award

Overlooking much of downtown Vicksburg, 10 South Rooftop Bar and Grill has quickly become a local dining staple for the year it’s been perched atop the old First National Bank building on Washington Street.

As a testament to its success, 10 South won the Outstanding New Development Project Award at the Mississippi Main Street Association’s 27th Annual awards luncheon in downtown Jackson on June 16.


Downtown merchants get lesson on promotions

Our local Main Street organization has been working with a state Main Street representative to grow and promote downtown.

Vicksburg Main Street hosted a Power Promotions Workshop for local merchants at The Wine House Wednesday with Jan Miller, the director of field services for Mississippi Main Street.

She described the role of the organization in the development of downtown.
